Ketevan Varshanidze (b. 1995)
Born in the coastal city of Batumi, Ketevan Varshanidze draws profound inspiration from the Black Sea and the city’s layered cultural identity. Batumi – shaped over centuries by the influences of Colchis, Greek, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Anglo-German civilizations – carries a rich historical resonance that subtly informs her artistic vision. Its antiquity is notable: in the 4th century BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle referred to the city of Batus on the Black Sea coast of Colchis, situating the region within a broader classical narrative. Varshanidze has been painting since childhood. In 2017, she graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, formally grounding her practice in academic training. After a period of creative pause, she returned to painting with renewed clarity and introspection. Her work constructs carefully considered environments in which architecture, landscape, and human presence exist in quiet yet subtly unsettling balance. Staircases, terraces, swimming pools, tennis courts, and coastal horizons form rational, almost serene frameworks – yet within them appear moments of emotional disruption: a solitary child, suspended fabric, circling birds, or stark contrasts of light and shadow. Varshanidze’s compositions are defined by clarity of form, controlled perspective, and restrained color palettes, punctuated by deliberate accents. The sea – whether directly visible or atmospherically implied – functions not only as landscape but as psychological space. Through this interplay of precision and vulnerability, she transforms familiar environments into contemplative territories where memory, isolation, and inner dialogue unfold. For the artist, inspiration emerges from a dialogue between inner reflection and the surrounding environment. “My inspiration is largely influenced by the environment and people,” she notes. “I think my paintings also seem to be inspired by the sea.” This intimate connection to place imbues her work with a quiet atmospheric depth, where memory, landscape, and emotion converge.
